More Fuller House On the Way!

For everyone that cares they already know that Fuller House, the reboot to the very popular 1990’s show Full House, was released on Netflix just last weekend on February 26th. The response was overwhelming. But was it overwhelmingly good or bad? The truth is that it was both. Reviews were highly polarized as fans either loved it or hated it and it’s very understandable why people would feel either way.
The people who hated it were the people who wanted Fuller House to become it’s own show that steps out of it’s predecessor’s shadow and even surpassing the legacy with little bits of nostalgia sprinkled here and there. What they got was a show inundated with references to the old show almost like it knows it can’t stand on it’s own feet without the foundation of the old show. Those that did love it, loved the fact that there was a gratuitous amount of nostalgic references. It brought them back to a time when things were simpler and scary things like climate change and Donald Trump weren’t all over the news.
The critics on the other hand weren’t so mixed. The majority of critics thought the show was too “self obsessed.” Remember those gratuitous throwbacks they have in every episode, Fuller House is so self aware that they even make fun of the old traditions of Full House like the constant use of family hugs to the point where it’s pretty much on the verge of breaking down the 4th wall. They also make frequent comments about how the Olsen twins refused to be part of the reboot. Dominic Patten says this about the show, “Maybe we know now why the Olsen twins decided to not participate. And it’s a real shame because ‘Fuller House’ starts off so well, with almost everyone else from ‘Full House’ on board and back in that Bay Area home… but unfortunately the adults basically become absentee landlords after the first episode and the series sags fast.”
The few critics that did have nice things to say about it were on the same page with the fans. Verne Gay of Newsday is all about the nostalgia factor. “This will be a hit, if only because old friendships must be rekindled, along with emotions too deep for words — even if those words are ‘cut it OUT!,’ and ‘You got it, dude.’” The stats for the show aren’t out yet since it’s only been a few days since it was released but they must have done unbelievably well considering that Netflix has already renewed the show for a second season. So if you are one of the fans that love the show then rejoice. If you’re one of the haters then you don’t have to watch any further, but let’s just keep an open mind. The second season will probably take a lot of the criticisms of the first season and the show can in fact be the show that we remember for the new age as it was intended.
