The Next Game of Thrones?

The pressure has been raised ever since HBO announced that Game of Thrones will only have two more seasons. If this is new news to you, HBO has already announced there will only be 13 episodes total left before the end of the show. Fans have been accustomed to around 10 episodes per season so when people realized the last two seasons will be woefully short, splitting 13 episodes across two seasons, the news was not received well. But, for those that crave George R.R. Martin’s unique story telling there is still hope.

George R.R. Martin confirmed on his LiveJournal blog that Universal Cable Productions has bought the rights to another one of his book series, Wild Cards. This series has actually been around for a lot longer than Game of Thrones with the first book being published in 1987. The series is quite popular in its own right with 22 novels to draw from.

The story takes place on Earth but not as we know it. In 1946 an alien virus rained down on Earth. “Of those infected, 90% died horribly, drawing the black queen, 9% were twisted and deformed into jokers, while a lucky 1% became blessed with extraordinary and unpredictable powers and became aces,” he added on his LiveJournal. “The world was never the same.”

“Wild Cards is a series of books, graphic novels, games, ” Martin wrote. “But most of all it is a universe, as large and diverse and exciting as the comic book universes of Marvel and DC (though somewhat grittier, and considerably more realistic and more consistent), with an enormous cast of characters both major and minor.”

Due to contract restrictions with HBO, Martin won’t be part of the new series but Martin wouldn’t leave his creation to someone that couldn’t do it justice. Martin’s long time assistant editor, Melinda M. Snodgrass will be an executive producer along with Gregory Noveck of RED, Slow Learner, and SyFy Films. Martin has expressed the hope that the show will be created and released in about a year or two, just in time for the Game of Thrones show to end.

Of course, HBO has also thought of the end of Game of Thrones. They have expressed interest in making a spin off of Game of Thrones. An adaptation of Tales of Dunk and Egg which is a prequel to the series may be underway but nobody has confirmed anything.
