Future for Amputees – Bionic Limbs are Real

James Young lost his left arm and foot in an unfortunate accident involving a train. His foot was lost in the accident and his arm had to be amputated to save his life. Though it was tough he managed to pick himself up and got through the last 4 years while maintaining a positive outlook on life. Now he’s got what many people have been dreaming of for years. A real bionic arm.

It felt strange to be fully clothed in front of the media for once @aannggeellll #alwaysshirtless #bionics #bodyhack

A team of engineers, roboticists, and designers led by Sophie de Oliveira Barata by Alternative Limb Project built the $90,000 custom arm for James. For those that love gaming like James does, you’ll realize it’s reminiscent of Solid Snake’s prosthetic arm from the game franchise Metal Gear Solid.

The arm is loaded with tons of tech. The wrist is a smartwatch, and it can even charge mobile devices. The functionality of the arm itself is also top of the line. The fingers can move independently to his will. Not to mention there are various LED lights built into the arm which means it can glow a variety of colors.

The arm can move via sensors controlled by his muscles. Though this is an incredible feat, James still hopes to have his bionic arm be as independent as his real arm one day. To achieve this he hopes to have the bionic arm attached directly to his skeletal system using titanium. This procedure is called osseointegration. The cost is immense so he hopes to raise funds through crowdsourcing. He has a gofundme page which can be found .
