Aftermath of Final Presidential Debate: Entering a New Era

Last night we wrapped up the third and final presidential debate for the 2016 elections. The first two were a complete mess and both candidates did their best to get the final word in regardless of who’s turn it was to speak, the final debate did not disappoint. Donald Trump of course said many facts that did not exactly line up to reality. Some of his more prominent factual mistakes included polls where he was in a dead heat with Clinton which nobody could verify. He also completely denied any relationship with Russia and Vladimir Putin which is highly suspect and of course it wouldn’t be a debate if he didn’t defend his spotless business background.
Clinton decidedly destroyed him during the debate. But, she did so in the previous two debates too. Political analysts and experts were on the fence about who won those previous debates. Wait, Clinton destroyed Trump but analysts didn’t know who won? Elections are about popularity and whether or not Trump’s facts stand up to Clinton’s isn’t what moves the masses. His swagger is what got him this far and it’s what continues to hinder Clinton. Of course this time around, things have changed. Trump does not have the support he once did. The big reveal that he is a sexual predator has significantly reduced his female supporters in a country where roughly 56% of all voters are female. The support he once had in DC now can’t seem to run away from him fast enough.
The latest electoral college polls (which are arguably the only ones that matter) shows 95% support for Clinton as next president. This overwhelming lead simply cannot be overcome. Now that we’ve basically seen the future it’s time to really understand what that means. Clinton becoming the next US president means the first female president. Now, that’s not a big deal in other countries that have had female leadership for many years such as the UK or South Korea but Clinton’s presidency fulfils a promise that anyone can indeed become president. While many people may still believe Clinton isn’t the right choice for president, it seems like she is the only choice to ensure that some level of sanity remains in the oval office.
The spotlight throughout the campaign has been on Trump and whether Clinton can topple the oddly charismatic but dangerous wildcard rather than if Clinton is the best candidate. But this overshadows a very dark issue. Trump basically built his platform on the fact that Clinton is a woman and because she is one she doesn’t deserve to be president. One of the most popular taglines for the Trump campaign is “Trump That Bitch,” implying that because she dares to defy a man she must be a bitch. Other taglines include “Clinton is a Cunt” and “KFC Hillary Special, 2 Fat Thighs 2 Small Breasts … Left Wing.” Basically, Trump supporters are sexually harassing Clinton. Many campaign against her just because of her gender regardless of politics.
The sad part is, this kind of attitude is unlikely to change even after the election. Regardless of whether Clinton wins overwhelmingly or not, there will be many people who just don’t believe a woman is fit to lead the nation. Experts in gender studies come to the same conclusion, “The more power women gain, the more sexual harassment they experience.” Even in the highest office of the United States of America, the pettiness of a male dominated government system still is clear as day. Political experts and social activists note that racism spiked after Obama became president and they unfortunately expect sexism to spike if Clinton wins as well.
