French Gymnast Samir Ait Said Snaps Leg During Olympics

People spend their entire lives preparing for the Olympics, the place where greatness from all over the world gathers. There can be no greater tragedy than when a young athlete suffers from a life altering injury. French gymnast Samir Ait Said unfortunately suffered a serious leg injury on Saturday when he landed badly off a vault during the men’s qualifying round. His left shin snapped in half, breaking both the tibia and the fibula (shin bones) and his leg was left to hang at an unbelievable angle until emergency medical services arrived.
To make matters worse paramedics dropped one end of the stretcher that was placed in while loading him onto an ambulance. Not much information has been released about his condition, but we are assured that he will recover eventually. Of course, this means that his Olympic dreams for this year are over.
The worst part of this injury is that this is not the first time this has ever happened to the Olympic hopeful. Right before the 2012 London Olympics, Samir suffered from a similar injury that broke his shin bones on his right leg. Due to that injury he was not able to participate in the last Olympic games. He was finally healed up and ready to go when this unfortunate incident occurred. Many experts say that this might be the end of his Olympic road for him.
Some people speculate that the fear of injury caused him to become unstable and favor his previously injured leg. This might have led to him putting extra strain on his left leg that snapped. Regardless of the reason, we wish Samir a speedy and complete recovery. We’d love to see what he’s really made of in the next Olympics.
